TRE® or Tension Release Exercises is a powerful, natural practice that helps us release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma.

It was developed by Dr. David Berceli and involves a series of simple exercises to activate our neurogenic tremors. These are part of our natural de-stressing system which is innate to all mammals.

The tremors feel like a gentle shaking or vibrating of our muscles, and promotes a profound sense of relaxation, peace and well-being. This allows our body to down-regulate our nervous system in a safe environment and encourages our mind and body to reintegrate into a state of balance.

By incorporating TRE® into our routine, we experience a significant reduction in stress levels, increase our sense of self and elevate our understanding of our own bodies.

Whether you’re dealing with everyday stressors or recovering from trauma (past or present), TRE® offers a somatic-led approach to improving our mental and physical health.

Non-talky therapy

For sufferers of PTSD, CPTSD, extreme stress, personal tragedy or trauma, TRE® helps by re-integrating the traumatized mind with the body. It allows painful emotions to be safely expressed without any need to talk about or relive the stressful or tragic experience.

Once the organism is working as a whole again, the person can begin to move through the trauma and back to health.

TRE® is used by military personnel across the world to allow the body to exorcise trauma quickly after an event.

Jeff A, Long Haul Pilot

"As an airline crew member based in Los Angeles it can be a struggle to get the proper rest on international flights. After hearing Lisa's explanation of how our bodies store stress, I signed up.

The TRE® sessions relieve my physical tensions and I feel rejuvenated with my mind and body at ease. I have discovered that for long after the sessions, my quality of sleep is greatly improved and I am more energetic throughout the days. Thank you Lisa!”

What are the medical implications of stress on our bodies?

The human body is a highly clever organism. If it believes your survival is under threat - be that from a lion in the Serengeti or someone trying to whip your job from beneath your feet in the Corporate Kingdom - it switches you to the biological equivalent of ‘DEFCON 1’, or Maximum Alert. In this mode the fight or flight hormones of Adrenaline and Cortisol flood your extremities giving you super fighting or fleeing powers, you will feel totally alert, your eyesight is sharpened, your senses keen, you are ready for action.

Deprioritise all non essential systems.

If the threat remains in place for days, the body then starts to safeguard itself in terms of energy, so it begins to shut down all ‘non-essential’ systems - basically any systems that don’t contribute to our immediate survival. These include:  ⦿     DIGESTIVE SYSTEM - since there’s no time for leisurely eating, digestion must be efficient and fast. Over a period of time, this leaves the body exposed to Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), heartburn, stomach ulcers, and eventually Crones disease. ⦿     INTERNAL IMMUNE SYSTEM - since you are fighting an external threat this is not seen as a priority. Over time the body can become prone to rashes, skin problems, acne, and eventually to serious auto-immune diseases.    ⦿    COMMUNICATIVE PARTS OF BRAIN - this negatively impacts our interpersonal relationships, making us jump to misunderstandings, become increasingly uncommunicative, quick to anger, and emotionally volatile.

It’s a clever system, but it is not meant to be left switched on!

TRE® is an effective way of switching it off, and enabling normal, healthy service to resume.

How many TRE® sessions do I need?

Every individual’s trauma or stress history is different, but to get a good understanding of what your body needs, it's recommended to experience 3 - 6 sessions over a period of 4 - 6 weeks to allow the body to gently release tensions, stresses and traumas that might have built up over time. If you want to work through a specific trauma or for those suffering from PTSD or CPTSD, it's strongly advised that you start with a private session with a Certified TRE® Provider.

Can I do TRE® on my own?

It is important that you become familiar with your body’s stress response first of all with the aid of a Certified TRE® Provider who can help you self-regulate and guide you through the process safely. However the process was designed as an autonomous, self-help tool so, provided you have learnt from a Certified TRE® Provider, after 3 or 4 sessions you will also be able to safely practice this on your own at home. It is still helpful to join a group or even have a private session a couple of times a year just to assist in your personal growth and enable you to go deeper into your personal practice. For a full list of Certified Providers please see www.traumaprevention.com If you are interested in becoming a Certified TRE® Provider yourself, please see the training schedules at traumaprevention.com or treforlife.com
